Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ceilidh?

A ceilidh is a type of social dance. It might also be referred to as a barn dance or country dancing. There’s a lot of galloping and spinning, and they are a good way to get everyone mixing. They are fun and silly, and you even get to hold hands sometimes. In a big circle. Because everybody likes to be in a big circle.

Do I need to know the dances?

Absolutely not! We employ a caller to teach you the dances, and they should lead you through everything, step-by-step. This is included in the cost to hire us.

Ceilidhs are suitable for all ages, from children to senior citizens, and can be adapted for people with disabilities or mobility problems.

Where can you play?

Without needing overnight accommodation, we’re happy to play anywhere within about 100 miles of Sheffield. We charge 50p per mile for two vehicles.

How long will the ceilidh be?

We’re happy to play for as long as you want us to!

We generally do 2x hour-long sets, with an interval in between. Usually if people are eating, we recommend an hour’s break so there is time to digest properly. If they’re not eating, then half an hour is usually more than enough time for folks to catch their breath and get a drink.

How long does it take to set up?

We tend to ask for around 2hrs to set up before the event. This gives us time to load in, set up, and sound check. The overall quality of the event depends a lot on good preparation and a sound-check that gets the most out of the acoustics of the space. However, we are able to be a bit flexible on the timings if you give us a bit of warning.

We can come earlier in the day to set up and be out of the way before your event starts, if you would like.

At the end of the event, we’re usually packed up and away within about 45 minutes. It’s like we were never there.

Do you provide amplification?

Yep! We have our own sound system included in the price to hire us, and you can use it too!

Could you use the PA at the venue?

We generally ask that we use our own PA – we know how it works and how to get the best sound out of it for your space. It’s fully PAT tested, so we know it’s safe to plug in and use.

We can use the sound system at the venue if you need us to, but we will need to use our own mixer. Just put us in contact with the venue and we’ll sort the rest out!

What other services can you provide?

Our other services are listed here. In short, we can provide a PA for music or speeches before or after the ceilidh, a full lighting rig, or (if you aren’t completely worn out dancing) a DJ.
